The Department Chairperson provides academic leadership to various programs in the School of Health Sciences.
This individual facilitates learning, quality teaching, scholarships and services.
The Department Chair serves as an integral member of the College and Campus administrative team.
The Department Chairperson also provides support and advise in the collective bargaining process and ensures adherence to relevant areas of any collective bargaining agreement.
This is a Professional Exempt Contractual (PEC) position for which an annual contract reflecting the base salary within the fiscal year (July 1st to June 30th) will be issued after ratification by Miami Dade College’s District Board of Trustees.
Duties & Responsibilities
Supervises the development and/or revision of curricula, and implements instructional programs
Communicates with full-time and part-time faculty on curriculum and instruction matters and ensures ongoing development of staff
Ensures that School of Health Sciences programs are in compliance with Florida Department of Education and Program Accreditation Body
Secures additional resources to support the programs through grant-writing, partnerships, contributions, and sponsorships; maintains data to support systematic program evaluation
Develops course schedules and faculty assignments
Hires, supervises, and evaluates full and part-time personnel; provides training opportunities for employees
Resolves issues and problems that may arise with faculty, staff, and students
Devises and supervises student recruitment and retention efforts; ensures efficient and effective student advisement
Prepares and maintains departmental budgets
Manages labs, equipment, and other departmental resources
Ensures the effective implementation of the faculty advancement processes
Provides program information and ensures the availability of advisement services
Teaches at least one course within the discipline per academic year
Works closely with the Dean of the School of Health Sciences
Serves on Campus and College-wide committees; participates in the development and implementation of College policies, procedures, and guidelines
Performs other duties as assigned
Minimum Requirements
Master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution in a health science discipline and at least five (5) years of combined experience in higher education as an educator and administrator
All educational degrees must be from a regionally accredited institution
Knowledge and understanding of the College’s organization, goals, objectives, policies, and procedures
Knowledge of the requirements of accreditation agencies
Possess exceptional organizational skills
Possess skills in budget preparation and management
Ability to supervise and train staff including organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments
Possess strong interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively communicate with a wide range of individuals and constituencies in a diverse multi-ethnic and multi-cultural community
Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors
Possess excellent communication skills (oral and written)
Possess computer application skills
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common, financial reports, and legal documents
Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format
Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from students, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community
Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
Ability to travel between program locations
Must be able to work a flexible schedule that may include evening and weekends assignments
Ability to work effectively in a multi-ethnic and multi-cultural environment with students, faculty, and staff
Preferences
Healthcare background in one of our Healthcare programs at Miami Dade College.
Essential Position
